If you are like most people, you might not look forward to coming to the dentist. But some people actually put off coming to the dentist because of a real fear. Perhaps they have had a traumatic childhood experience or feel uncomfortable with the instruments or physical proximity of the dentist’s office. Regardless of its source, sedation can help you have a better experience if you have dental anxiety.

While we use anesthetics to control pain during a procedure, sedation is used to help you feel calm and relaxed, and can even be used during cleanings. Sedatives come in a wide variety of strengths and delivery options, so there is one that is right for you and your treatment. Here is more information about two of the options we provide at Stepp Family Dentistry.

One type is oral sedation. This involves taking an oral medication before you come for your treatment. By the time you arrive, you will feel at ease. Oral sedatives can vary from mild to moderate strength depending on the dose. Another type of sedation we provide is given intravenously during a procedure, and can also vary in strength. This method enables us to monitor and control how it is working from moment to moment.

Depending on the level of sedation, you may fall asleep or feel groggy. While you will retain consciousness, you may not remember all of your visit. Arrange for someone to drive you home afterward.

With sedation dentistry, you don’t need to fear a trip to the dentist. We want to provide you with the most comfortable care possible. Please call our Bellaire, TX, office with any questions you have about sedation today.
