Walking down the oral hygiene aisle in the grocery store can be a serious assault on the sense. In recent year manufacturers have made a very serious effort to create products that stand out in hopes of drawing your attention with promises of cleaner teeth, a whiter smile or dubious alternatives to flossing.

It can be hard for you the consumer to understand which of these products is right for you and your family or simply how they should be used.
First off you want to look for the American Dental Association’s Seal of Acceptance. This seal means that the product has been researched and tested by the ADA for safety and effectiveness.

There are two different types of toothbrushes you can choose from. Powered toothbrushes have a small battery powered motor that rotates the brush head. Manual toothbrushes are simply a handle attached to bristles. Neither one has been found to be more effective at cleaning your teeth than the other. Ultimately it comes down to personal preference. Selecting the brush that you like best will encourage you to use it more often.

Floss comes in waxed and unwaxed versions. There is no clinical difference between waxed and unwaxed floss. Whichever one you choose ultimately comes down to convenience or your own personal preference.

It’s important when flossing not to damage your gums by forcing or snapping the floss in between your teeth. People who have tight spaces between their teeth or who struggle to get floss started might prefer waxed floss. The waxy coating helps slide the floss between the teeth smoothly and safely.

Many people also like using mouth rinse or mouthwash as part of their oral hygiene regimen. You should beware mouthwashes that claim to replace the need for flossing. While several brands of antiseptic mouthwash can indeed help kill bacteria in the mouth, they cannot replace floss’s ability to remove food particles from between your teeth.
